West Kirk is a Presbyterian Church, this means that it’s led by elders. There are 15 elders at the Kirk. We’ll get a wee profile and photo of the Kirk Session on the site soon.
The Ministry Team
We’re blessed to have a ministry team in West Kirk, here are the team that currently serve full time in West Kirk and The West Kirk Community Project….
Dave Clawson – Minister
David Clawson grew up in the far East… Dundonald, he’s now settled in North Belfast and would really love to be a Shankill Road man. He’s been in full-time ministry for 20 years, but has been the minister of West Kirk since July 2011. He’s married to Naomi and they have three children. If he gets any spare time he like to bowl and eat a kebab. His role as minister involves teaching the Bible, pastoral work and oversight. As teaching elder, he is part of the Kirk Session, a team of elders who lead the congregation.
Walter McBride – Community Project Worker
Walter is the project worker & loyal servant at The Centre, the home of the West Kirk Community Project. He’s been there since way back in 1995. He’s the handsome face you’ll meet on entering The Centre, (through he will often pretend to be Walter’s twin brother…so watch out). He’s a Born and bred Shankill Road man, who’s still living on the Shankill, He says “I’m in the community for the community, OUR COMMUNITY!” He’s engaged to Christine who helps him stay on solid ground. Walter loves most sporting activities, especially football. He’s a die hard Aston Villa hooligan, ‘oops’ sorry Aston Villa supporter!? Find out more about The Centre
Rebecca Finlay – Women’s Worker
Rebecca joined West Kirk as Women’s Worker in June 2018. She says of Women’s Ministry “Ever since Jesus called me to himself and saved my life, women’s ministry has had a pull on my heart. It was through the friendship of two young women that I first witnessed the Gospel lived out.” Rebecca is mum to the little legend that is Reuben. She studied Theology in Queens at Union College where she gained a first class Bachelor of Theology degree; Rebecca also has qualifications in youth ministry and counselling. We would say her greatest qualification for the role is her growing love for Jesus and for people which is obvious to all who meet her. Rebecca’s role is to encourage and equip women who are involved in ministry, to engage in evangelism through the church program and community work, and to develop new women’s ministry and mission in Kirk and Community.
Peter Burke – Assistant Minister
Peter’s journey to work in West Kirk took in many jobs, in retail, building, community work, work with homeless, and serving with a mission agency in Cape Town, South Africa. After all this moving around he feels at home in North Belfast. Peter and Kelly and their 3 boys (Jonah, Isaac and Micah) joined West Kirk in summer 2018.
