Walter’s Football Thought for The Day

Walter McBride has been looking at each of the 20/21 Premier League Teams for an inspiration for his daily WhatsApp Thoughts…

During the 2020 lockdown, West Kirk Community Project Co-ordinator Walter, has been sending out a daily message from the scriptures. Here is a series he did, drawing on the England Premier League football team crests…

Aston Villa – Prepared

1 Corinthians 16:13 “Watch ye; stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong”.

Looking at the Aston Villa badge (which just so happens to be embroidered on a lot of my clothing) got me thinking to myself earlier. There’s a word called PREPARED on it which is part of the football teams motto. This word Prepared has a lot in common with yours truly (ME), not as a football supporter, which I love but rather as a Christian Warrior who’s living for my Lord and Saviour.

To prepare for almost everything, we may draw up a plan, put it together and then work out our best method for attack or defence. We can be prepared to the moon and back, yet still come out at the end of the tunnel beaten, battered and feeling like a loser.

The above is referring to being prepared in worldly matters but I have to ask you as my friends, are you prepared for your life when it comes to spiritual matters? Are you prepared now to meet the Lord Jesus if you were to die and leave this scene of time? It’s not that hard to prepare for the unexpected destination of your spiritual Eternal Life when you really think about it. If you are not prepared for Heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ then I’m afraid that you are prepared for Hell with satan instead. Please be PREPARED today my friend and become a soldier of the Cross of King Jesus because He’s preparing a place for His people as I write this.

John 14:3 “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also”

Arsenal –

Acts 2:21 “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved”

The Arsenal name came about and was formed by a group of workers from the Royal Armament Factory which produced small arms and explosives. They played their part during the war and although the cannon and badge have been altered over the years, they are still famously known as the Gunners. At this present time, the Arsenal have a great player in their team called David Luiz.

He’s a Brazilian Evengelical Christian and proud of his Faith which he never denies,, always speaking of his love for his Jesus and his Lord.Infact during a UEFA Champions League final, David wore a shirt with the words Deus e’ Fiel on it which is in English is translated “GOD Is FAITHFUL”.

David Luiz takes a stand for his Saviour and knows in his own heart that God has been faithful to him. Accept the Lord Jesus Christ into your life just like David has done and you to will find out that God is forever Faithful.

Roman’s 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thou mouth the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved”

Brighton & Hove Albion

Micah 7:19 “He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depth of the sea”

Brighton Hove Albion began in 1901 and were elected into the big boys league in 1920. In the mid 1970’s they were called the Dolphins but that was short lived and a new Crest was introduced along with the Seagulls. Being a seafront town and with the seagulls in mind, I’d like to finish my 20 Premiership Crests with the word SEA.

In Micah 7:19, God’s Word talks about God taking our sins from us and throwing them into the sea of His forgetfulness or the depths of the sea. Isn’t this yet another Devine promise from God to all those people who repent of their sins and ask Him into their heart. When God forgives us our sins and places them deep in the sea, He never brings them back again to scold us or hurt us. Call upon the Lord while He is near and while He can still be found.

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”

Psalm 33:4 “For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth”.

The Burnley badge to my knowledge has the most items on it with many stories behind each one of them. Its got so much going on in it like a ribbon, lion, bees, a goose with feathers in its mouth with a egg on its foot, a hand and some other symbols on top of that. My reference on the Crest is about the hand on it which comes from Burnley Town, meaning to (HOLD THE TRUTH). When men, women or young people give there life over to Jesus, then it becomes their Christian duty not only to hold the Truth but to share the Truth as well. The Scriptures in the Bible are the TRUTH the whole TRUTH and nothing but the whole TRUTH for us to trust in. When we take hold of the TRUTH of Salvation, our lives are changed forever and the Lord Jesus Christ then holds us in His ever lasting loving arms.

John 8:32 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”

Psalm 121:3 “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber”.

Looking at the Lion on the Chelsea emblem got my already over stretched mind thinking overtime on how I could do a wee thought concerning the Gospel of Christ. The Lion is a feared but respected creature with plenty of power and filled with beauty and adoration to the human eye. The Lion is given the famous title as King of the Jungle or as we say on the road,, The big Cheese or Number 1. There’s a Lion of Judah mentioned in the scriptures which is referring to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lion of Judah represents Blessings, Majesty, Holiness and Devine Protection to all who are saved and walking the pathway of righteousness according to the Word of God. The Lion would give its life for its family pride just as the Lord Jesus done for you and me at the Cross Dear friend. Let Jesus be your Lion of Judah today or tonight.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 “But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and keep you from evil”.

Crystal Palace

Galatians 3:26 “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus”

Crystal Palace are one of the first clubs to appoint a Chaplin in their team as far as I know. Chris Roe was or still is the latest Chaplin connected with the club and he works along with Palace and other churches in the community in Croydon.

Chris Roe – CP Chaplain

A Chaplins duties should include being on call, supportive, counsellor, role model and a witness for King Jesus to people as well as a multitude of other stuff. If you happen to be in a sporting team, music, business or any other work related way as a Christian, then you have a very important role to play, A ROLE MODEL FOR JESUS!!

As a believer in the Lord, your duties are no different from a Chaplin because your called to be the light to others and support them through your prayers. With sincere respect my friend, why not be your own Chaplin in your own community and point the way of the GREAT I AM.

Roman’s 14:8 “For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s”

Colossians 1:10 “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God”.

When reading into the Premiership teams history, it’s really pleasing to see just how many of them are steeped and formed in the christain church or faith based. Everton have a great connection to the Methodist Church from the old St. Domingos. In 1879 the Rev Chambers was one of the many involved in Christianity at Everton. Everton’s Motto is (Nil Satis Nisi Optimum) which means “NOTHING BUT THE BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH”

Although this is a football motto,, can you imagine or visualise if God’s born again children of faith used this motto as their spiritual war cry? NOTHING BUT OUR BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH!! We just have to pray to King Jesus and give Him our very best and He will do the rest that’s required. Christ is good enough for all who call on His name for His Grace and Mercy.

1 Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 12:10 “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another”.

Fulham FC may not credited as one of the biggest or best clubs in the City of London but as far as I’m concerned, it’s been blessed in the years gone by. Fulham came into life when St Andrew’s Church worshippers founded it in the 1870’s. This Church of England congregation were mostly members of it’s Sunday School and saw this as a vision to do the Lord’s work and Will for His Glory.I know as i write this, most of London in general have no time for God and the Gospel and therefore the multi faiths, especially the Muslim religion is on the rise rapidly. We need to get back to the old days of preaching Christ Cruified and our blessed Sunday School teachings.

This is a fact that when Sunday School was at its highest peak, crime rate was at its lowest peak but now in 2020 Sunday School numbers are at their lowest peak ever and crime rate is recorded at the highest peak ever.

Isaiah 41:13 “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, fear not; I will help thee.”

Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

A Leeds Utd up coming young keeper called Illan Meslier said in a statement when he signed for them that he just adored the Leeds fans and that Leeds was like a religion.

Football can well indeed become like a religion for some die hard supporters who would nearly give their life for their club. Take a guy called Gary Edward’s who hasn’t missed a Leeds match in all his travels over the last 50 years. Now that’s what i would call Commitment, Dedication, Devotion, Loyalty and Faithfulness. This is a good example how Christian men and women should be when serving their God and even more if truth be told.

Just as a football supporter isn’t meant to be arm-chair general, the Lord’s servants arent called to be pew warmers if they are able to do more as a child of God. Let’s all be that die hard man and woman of faith and show more faithfulness and dedication concerning the Lord’s work on earth.

Super Fan Gary Edwards

Proverbs 16:3 “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established”

Leicester City

2 Timothy 3:13 “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived”.

Leicester City are a Premiership club that probably arnt given as much respect and acknowledgement for how they have played and what they have achieved over the last couple of years. On their badge there’s a picture of a fox right in the middle it.

The fox is well known as a sly old character and in most occasions, it only cares about its own survival and will use every trick in the book to hoodwink anyone and everyone. The fox is Cunning, Sleekit, Tricky and Devious, just like someone who prowls around the Child of God to harm or confuse their Christian walk. Its the devil and his deceievers who just like the fox are always trying to steal something from someone at every opportunity they get, and that’s the Glory of God.

Don’t let Satan the fox point you to a eternal hell without Christ as he is known as Satan the great deceiver.Call upon the name of Jesus and He will make all your wrongs right and your crooked paths straight for time and Eternity.

Galatians 6:7 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”

Deuteronomy 31:8 “And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed”.

What about the Liverpool team eh,, my dad’s old team who would give me dogs abuse when they beat the Villians which was far to often for my liking. I could speak on the liver bird which is on the Liverpool badge as that alone would be a great subject to bring out and share with you’s. But I’ve found something more powerful than the liver bird and that’s the most famous song known and sung in football throughout the entire world in my opinion.

When you hear over 50,000 fans at Anfield singing it, it makes the hair on the back of neck stand up and those fans feel so proud and awesome. Well people, here’s a Truth to ponder and chew over concerning the Liverpool song!!

You’ll never walk alone in your life PHYSICALLY or SPIRITUALLY when you ask the Lord Jesus into your heart and repent from your sins. So no matter what you are walking through in life, a storm or the dark with your dreams in ruins. Remember to hold your head high with hope in your heart as “YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE” with the Lord at your side for time and eternity.

Hebrews 13:5b “For He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Manchester City

Colossians 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him”

Manchester City are seen today as the team to beat with their very skillful players and the way they conduct themselves on the football field. When you read about City, you’ll find that they were founded by a Church in the 1880’s, St Mark’s Anglican Church.

The Church had a vision and were inspired to try and win young men back into the Church to learn about God and a Heaven to be gained and a Hell to be shunned. I don’t know how many came to faith through the Man City Church vision but what a witness for a Church to do. I personally know through football and our own wee Church team, Westkirk Young Men that the Christian influence in our team was great and most of the players supported us at Church activities and other programmes we run.

There’s still a vision in Church that through football, lost souls heading to a Christless Eternity can repent and be saved for a Eternity with Jesus. Lets be like that Man City Church of years gone by and have a vision to bring men and women back into Church.

It is time to seek the Lord.

Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he”

Manchester United

2 Corinthians 11:14 “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light”.

Have you ever taken notice of the picture of the devil on the Man Utd badge?

The Christian man/woman in general usually mentions the evil of the devil along with his traps and snares he tries to tempt us with. Have you ever sat down and thought to yourself just what does the devil actually look like? Is he red like on the Man Utd badge or any other colour for that matter? Does he have two horns, a pointed goatee beard with red eyes and a tail along with some sort of pitchfork? He may well do look like the above but the Bible tells me a couple of known truths about the devil and this helps to keep me on high alert concerning him. He can come as a angel of light or as a roaring lion so either way, we must keep our defences up from his attacks. No matter what he looks like, we’re encouraged to resist him at all costs. (James 4:7). I once heard a Christian brother refer to the devil as a shrewd cookie, so ask the Lord to protect you against the devil and his many evil ways.

1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he will devour”

Newcastle United

Matthew 6:20,21 (“But lay up for yourself treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”

. Newcastle United (The Magpies) came about through a merger in 1892 between Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. Newcastle is one of the highest revenue producing clubs in the world and their loyal fans (The Toon Army) follow them in their thousands. The Magpies owner Mike Ashley may well brag about being a Toon fan but he’s a business man first and foremost and in my personal opinion,, money motivated. What Mr Ashley and many others have to understand is that money can’t buy you everything your heart may desire. Money can’t buy you Manners, Respect, Morals, Character, Trust, Common Sense, Patience, Class, Integrity, Love and Eternal Life in Heaven. To have money is fine but the Word of God says that to love money is the root of all evil.

1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows”.

Sheffield United

Ephesians 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God”

Sheffield United was by far the hardest club badge to find something on so i could bring a wee Gospel message through it. The Blades as they are nick named are a off shoot from Sheffield Utd cricket club formed in 1889. They were called the Blades due to the history of Steel Production in Sheffield. The Word Blade means, Cutting Edge, Knife, Spear, Shank, Razor or Sword. The Sword is a powerful weapon and every christain carries one or shame on them if they don’t. The Sword in a two edged Sword that God’s children use daily and its none other than the Bible. The believers Blade or Sword is Powerful, Tough, Solid, Sound with Stability, Firmness, Backbone and a Anchor to stand firm in the Faith. Carry your Sword always with pride and take a stand for Jehovah Jirah as God is in control and will provide for His Annointed.

Hebrews 4:12a “For the word of God is quick, and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword”

Psalm 97:10 “Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserve the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked”

The Southampton badge is from religious roots of a young men’s Christian association connected to St Mary’s Church. The Halo sitting at the top of the badge was to help remind its loyal fans of its proud link to the Church. They are well known as the Saints and their ever famous song,, “O WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN”.

The saints of the Lord Jesus Christ are indeed marching all over our world declaring the Gospel message that Jesus died for us and wants us to put our trust in Him.If you want to be counted in the number of God’s people, it’s as easy as ABC, Accept, Believe and Confess. Become a Saint in the Saviour and live for Him or stay a sinner in sin and deny the sinners friend who is King Jesus.

Colossians 1:4 “Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to a the saints”

Proverbs 2:8 “He keepeth the paths of Judgement, and preserve the the way of the saints”

Tottenham Hotspur

Psalm 62:7 “In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God”

From reading on line it’s true to say that Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) have a large Jewish following with some Christian values attached with its supporters. On the old Spurs badge the cockrel is standing on a football with some Latin writing under it.

It says (Audere Est Facere) meaning..

What a motto to have “TO DARE IS TO DO”.

As Spurs supporters or even people in general,, we must dare to do something with our life here on earth and that’s to ask Jesus into our sinful hearts.

This dare to do is a free gift to anyone who wants to become a child of faith and serve the Lord for His Glory.

Dare to nail your colours to the mast as to speak and become a servant of King Jesus.

TO DARE IS TO DO all for Jesus as that would be a great motto or banner to stand under.

John 6:29 “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent”

West Bromwich Albion

Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”

The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23:1) is one of the most used passages of scripture at a funeral, mostly to give comfort or assurance to those grieving the loss of a loved one. West Brom Albion (The Baggies) and Psalm 23, the Lord is my Shepherd have been in partnership from at least the 1970’s.

Its said that on Sunday 27th January 1974, the baggies sung Pralm 23 and it’s stuck with them to this very day.

Today when you watch W.B.A. playing on TV, you’ll see a Great Banner in the stands with the words, “THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD”.

With Psalm 23:1 in our heads, can i leave you with a personal question and a challenge that only you can answer yourself. IS THE LORD IS YOUR Shepherd ?? You will never want when you surrender your soul to King of Kings.

Psalm 23:1 “The Lord is my shepherd ; I shall not want”

West Ham United

1 Corinthians 1:23a “But we preach Christ crucified”

West Ham Utd have two well known nick names in their ranks which are the “Irons” and the “Hammers”. Both nicknames relate to their original name which was the Thames Ironworks FC. When England won the world cup in 1966 its said that three players of that squad who were West Ham players, played a great part in it, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peter’s. The Hammers used to have a large skinhead following and I would still occasionally listen to some of their music, the London Skinhead Crew.

I’m going to mention the word Hammer… The Lord Jesus was nailed or hammered to the Cross for the sin of man. Hammered unto that tree so that through His death, we would be given the chance to be saved by His love he showed at Calvary. I’ll close with these words concerning the Hammers. Lets play a part in the name of Jesus and be soul winners and warriors for the Glory of the risen Saviour.

Luke 9:23 “And he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers

1 Corinthians 15:33 “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners”

Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) from the West Midlands are a interesting team to look in to for local information about them. Have you ever asked yourself why the Wolves kit is mostly gold and black all through it? In Wolverhampton town hall, that’s where the Wolves colours came from with the inscription (out of darkness cometh light). But i want to mention and bring to your attention the Wolf for a few seconds that’s on the Wolves football badge. The Christian believer is well warned to stay clear of Wolves, especially the ones that come as Wolves in sheep’s clothing. Metaphorically speaking some Wolves who represent the devil have got in among the sheep who resemble God’s children. Those who love the Lord Jesus must be on red alert and watch that Wolves don’t enter into their fold as they will cause havoc & destroy Churches at every given opportunity. The child of God needs to pray and put on the whole Armour of King Jesus.

Matthew 7:15-16a “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are as ravening Wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
